CALIFORNIA & UTAH HOMEOWNERS FIGHT TUMBLEWEED INVASION

Homeowners in parts of Southern California and Utah woke up last week to an invasion of tumbleweed piled up against their homes, that in some cases kept them trapped inside for several hours.

The tumbleweed invasion was driven by strong winds, which blew masses of the spiky plants into homeowners’ yards and streets in affected areas. Some homeowners reported that the tumbleweed had piled up as high as five feet, making it impossible for them to get outside.

Sue Jones, a spokeswoman for the city of Victorville in California, which was one of the most affected towns, said in some cases the tumbleweed had reached the second floor of some buildings.

Around 150 homeowners in Victorville reported battling tumbleweeds last week. Numerous homeowners in Salt Lake City reported similar battles with the weeds as they blew across the city. Residents and city clean up teams alike have been working to clear the tumbleweed from suburban areas.

“It’s a nightmare. It’s very irritating,” Bryan Bagwell, a Victorville-based broker at Bryan Bagwell Real Estate, told realtor.com. Bagwelle said he had to hir two men to remove the tumbleweed from his property, and the process to clear the thorny weeds that had piled up to more than 4.5 feet on some areas of his property took six-and-a-half hours.

“It’s been an ongoing situation. Once every couple of weeks, when the wind blows, we get tumbleweeds,” Bagwell said. “It can be as little as five to 10 tumbleweeds or as many as several hundred tumbleweeds in my yard.”

The dry weeds are also a fire hazard, so city crews have been busy removing them.
